M. L. Liebler & The Magic Poetry Band is the brainchild of Wayne State University professor (and St. Clair Shores, Michigan's first Poet Laureate) M.L. Liebler. Over the last twenty plus years, M.L. has combined his insightful, urban poetry with the funky tones of modern jazz, resulting in a perfect elision of sound and vision. Along with M.L. is Griot Galaxy saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey, Detroit's CJQ, The Woolies, Detroit Artist Workshop guitarist Ron English, road-tested bass player and album producer Jef Reynolds (Leslie Gore band, Alex Chilton, Fats Domino, The Platters, and others)  and resident drummer and gamesman Bill Hulet.

M.L. Liebler delivered this Public Radio essay ("What's Going On? A Detroit Poet in Israel During Wartime") on WDET-FM's Front Row Center Show Hosted by Celeste Headlee in November 2006. This audio clip is courtesy of WDET-DM Radio in Detroit www.wdetfm.org

M.L. Liebler's new groundbreaking book of poems about Germany, Israel and Russia will be released from The Wayne State University Press in April 2008.

When M.L. Liebler scrawls, types, speaks or sings the blues, our whole unseen world shakes. Poetry, the original human language, races back like “blood in the moon tonight.” With readable pages and playable tracks, how can lovers of poems and story-songs not be stopped in their tracks? The ineffable power of human utterance – full of feeling, full of skill -- can’t be stopped. M.L. Liebler’s arrow aims at more than the heart and mind. Like Lazarus, he drifts to tell us how much we need one another, how lonely we labor in our TV, CD, DVD, LED, iPOD, Satellite caves, “filling the blue ancient Chinese night,” the Michigan night, and “all the wars we fight in our sleep.”

Al Young, Poet Laureate of California.

What Some Folks Say About M. L.

"M. L. Liebler is a piece of the reality poetry that needs to stay alive... He is a beacon shining for the republic (of poetry and love) for which he stands."

Alicia Ostriker

"M. L. Liebler is the backbone of the new literary renaissance."

Bob Talbert The Detroit Free Press

"M. L. is an American populist artist in the tradition of the Beat poets, Carl Sandburg and Diego Rivera..."

Ed Sanders

"Liebler is a tremendous source of poetry energy in The Motor City & beyond."

John Sinclair

"Written in Rain is a piercing collection of remembrances and celebrations. M. L. Liebler writes about the face of heat, his mother's dreams, and midnight ghosts."

Jayne Cortez

"M. L. Liebler's poems remind me of Carl Sandburg's voice. Big in spirit, they shout their truths, encompassing what hurts and what heals. His imagination takes off from his century's and country's news: urban wastelands, Vietnam, rock 'n' roll, good loving. Spending time in their company teaches you more about America than a spin down the highway."

Shirley Geok-lin Lim
